Why Your Body Needs Fish Oil & Reasons to Supplement Your Diet

Not everyone loves the taste of seafood, but fish and fish oil contain some of the most important nutrients that your body needs. The traditional American diet is deficient in omega-3 fatty acids, but fish and fish oil are great ways to get this essential nutrient.

These are some of the potential benefits of fish oil and the most common reasons that people choose to supplement their diets with it.

What Fish Oil Really Is

As the name suggests, fish oil is derived from the tissues or livers of oily fish. Fatty, cold water fish produce the best fish oil for human consumption. For example, salmon, sardines, and mackerel are all great sources of omega-3s. The oil from fish is a highly concentrated source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are fats that our bodies need but can’t produce enough of on their own. This means that we need to get omega-3s from food or supplementation to maintain optimal health.

Potential Fish Oil Benefits

A quick search on the internet will touch on many of the potential benefits of fish oil that are both physical and mental. Fish oil has been linked to promoting a healthy heart, brain, mood, bones, and joints … just to name a few of the many promising benefits.

The Various Forms of Fish Oil

Fish Liver Oil is rich in omega-3s, and our capsules have a 30 percent composition of omega-3 fatty acids. This is a very high level for fish oil. Better yet, these capsules are 100 percent pure and contain no other ingredient besides 1% natural vitamin E as an antioxidant.

Another great source of omega-3s is Shark Liver Oil. Seagate discontinued shark fishing operations in 1999, but we still receive cartilage and the livers from local fish fillet plants, where a low volume of shark meat is processed for food in grocery stores. This product contains one of the highest natural levels of omega-3s in the world and is also 100 percent pure with only vitamin E added as another ingredient.

In addition to fish and fish oil supplements, other healthy and natural sources of omega-3 fatty acids are walnuts, chia seeds, and flax seeds. You can even find healthy omega-3s in vegetables, like Brussels sprouts and spinach.

Reasons to Support Your Diet with Fish Oil

Fish oil offers a wide variety of benefits as a preventive measure and also to support general health. Many people take fish oil to keep their heart healthy and also to stimulate brain activity. Meanwhile, others use fish oil as an anti-aging measure to promote healthy hair and skin. Pet owners sometimes give fish oil to their dogs for these same reasons too!

As with all supplements, it’s important to get your fish oil from a trusted source and not settle for the cheapest version you find in big-box stores. Always check the percent of omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish oil brands and note what other ingredients are put into the capsules.
