Did you think that growing vegetables organically is easy? The soil is healthy, the plants are strong and the fertilizer is pure and nutritious. However, the hard work on an organic farm is controlling weeds without the use of herbicides. Monsanto and friends are not allowed to visit. The result is that the weeds are free to grow alongside the plants.
The photo to the left shows a freshly weeded patch in our tomato field. The weeds must be trimmed or pulled by hand. Depending upon what is being gown, there can be up to 10 lbs of weeds for every 1 lb of vegetables that is growing in the field. The weeds must be constantly trimmed in order to allow sunlight, food, and water to each the plant. Welcome to the world of organic farming. It is not easy.
