When you’re growing your own organic garden at home, the care and maintenance process differs between spring, summer, fall, and winter. Yet summer is the time that we often spend the most time in our gardens because of backyard entertaining, nice weather, and a little more vacation time.
Whether you’re growing flowers, fruits, vegetables, or a little bit of everything, here are some summer organic garden tips to keep in mind.
Check for Insects Daily
Insects are a big problem in the summer, so make a plan to pick off the ones you can see each day. This is a great way to prevent infestations without the use of chemicals. However, don’t get rid of beneficial insects like spiders, ladybugs, and bees. If you end up needing a pesticide, make a DIY version with a combination of dish soap, cooking oil, and water in a spray bottle.
Prune Away Dead Foliage Promptly
Dead leaves and foliage hinder the growth of the rest of the plant, so keep an eye out for leaves that turn yellow and die. Remove these parts to prevent infection from spreading to healthy parts of the leaves and flowers.
In the summer, mulching your beds prevents moisture evaporation so you don’t have to water as often. Mulching also provides protection from the UV rays of the sun. It’s not too late to mulch in the summer, so choose organic mulches mixed with compost materials, if possible.
When you do water plants in the summer, water them strategically and consistently. Inconsistent watering causes cracked fruits, yet over-watering causes fruits to become mushy. Plan to do your watering first thing in the morning to boost absorption and avoid getting water on the leaves of nightshade plants to prevent fungal growth. Outdoor fruits and vegetables tend to need about an inch of water per week in the summer, while container plants often need water twice per day.
Keep Plant Beds Weeded
Weeds will suffocate your plants, so be diligent about weeding in your garden this summer. Weeding is also great exercise and a wonderful excuse to spend more time outdoors in nice weather.
Fertilize with Fish
Seaweed and fish are some of the very best things that you can provide to your summer garden, which is why we offer Seagate Fish Fertilizer Concentrate and Seagate Seaweed & Fish Soil Tabs. These natural fertilizers are made from whole anchovies and sardines caught off the shores of Baja California and from dehydrated sardines and seaweed that’s harvested by hand by Seagate’s contract divers. They’re perfect for feeding real, non-chemical food to your flowers, trees, and vegetables to make them healthier, stronger, and more disease-resistant. One application of Seagate fertilizer can continue to feed plants and flowers for up to four to five months.
